A little history on TYING ONE ON, we started up in 2003.  The owner is Jeff Caldwell.  I have had a good close friend, Mike Isaac (a.k.a “Tying One On” Head Jig Thrower), help me along the way too.  Mike gave feedback, input, questions to think about, and anything else that was needed.  Mike has spent long time fishing in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and anywhere else he could wet a line, along with professionally guiding clients for a living.

In the fall of 2003, Mike introduced me to jig fishing for steelhead and salmon under a float.  That’s when he showed me how to tie different jigs, and then I started designing and tying different jigs.  I tested various jigs and hooks, and different ways of tying material on jigs.  Next we field tested to see how they worked in the water and how the fish reacted to them.  Then, we looked at how we could improve the jig market, and this is what we came up with...

We have decided to use a powder-coated jig head, the paint won’t chip off as easily as vinyl coated jig heads when it hits the bottom.  I have also decided to tie the jigs that you can’t find in the local sporting goods store or big box stores, along with the traditional standard steelhead/salmon jigs.  My jigs come in football, round-head, tube, or shake head jigs.

The hooks that I use on the jigs are Gamakatsu 604 Heavy Duty Jig Hooks in sizes of 6/0, 5/0, 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 1/0, 1, & 2 and Gamakatsu 255 Steelhead/Salmon Jig Hooks in sizes of 2/0, 1/0, & 1.  As far as I know the Gamakatsu 255 Steelhead/Salmon Jig Hooks are the only hooks made for Steelhead & Salmon Jig Fishing.  Gamakatsu hooks are very, very sharp hooks along with being strong.  I can pour the heads and tie the jigs on Eagle Claw jig hooks in styles 570, 575, 630, 635, & 640, call or email for hook sizes.

I use materials that are difficult to find like Polar Bear Hair, Black Bear Hair, as well as man made products.  NOTE:  POLAR BEAR HAIR IS AVAILABLE IN LIMITED SUPPLY.  ALL HAIR IS LEGAL, TAKEN PRIOR TO MARINE MAMMAL ACT OF 1972.  POLAR BEAR IS KNOWN AS A FLY-TIER’S SECRET.  NOTHING MAN-MADE OR NATURAL COMPARES TO THE MOVEMENT AND SHEEN OF IT!  POLAR BEAR HAIR IS MINE AND MIKE’S FAVORITE MATERIAL TO USE FISHING!

The thread I use on my jigs are stronger than your average fly tying thread, which means that it should not break or come apart.  I also put two half hitches and two whip finish to finish the jig, along with coating the thread with head cement.  That way if by chance one or two knots come undone, you don’t lose your entire jig!

I have really have enjoyed developing and designing my own fly patterns over the years.  Over 25 years ago I developed a fly pattern for Steelhead & Salmon, which I named Jeff’s Deschutes Nymph.  From the feedback, I received it worked better than Jim Teeny’s Nymph.  Jeff’s Deschutes Nymph has caught steelhead & salmon from the Deschutes River to Alaska.   I have been tying flies and fly-fishing off and on for over 30 years.  The last 6 years, I have been teaching the Hermiston School District 5th Graders, at their Outdoor School.  I have been teaching them about the different types of fishing and fly-fishing, along with casting a fly rod, for most of them their first time fly-fishing!  It’s always been a thrill to catch a good size fish on a fly/jig that you designed.  That’s why I have decided to open up a custom & hand crafted fishing tackle store.

If you don’t see any jig type that you like, please, just call or email me, and I will work with you to design one that you will like.  Remember, NO mass produced jigs here, only one tied at a time.  MADE IN AMERICA AND FROM OREGON STATE!  Tying One On to catch the big one!

Hope to see you on the water fishing!

Thanks, Jeff Caldwell Owner of Tying One On Jigs.
